Learning to swim is a combination of both mental strength and skill. While age can play a role. It is ultimately one’s mental attitude and determination that will determine how quickly one progresses. Young people may have an advantage in this case.
Several arguments:
- A lighter body weight can make it easier to move quickly in the water.
- Fear can be a major obstacle in learning to swim. Children have less fear.
- Being less fatigued can help with the physical exertion of learning to swim.
Make sense, right?

How to practice swimming correctly
You can find many types of practical videos on YouTube, but unfortunately, most of them are not useful. A beginner needs a step-by-step guide. I will teach you from my personal experience. If you follow this method well, you can learn to swim within a few hours.
Step 01: Do not let fear hold you back from the water.
The initial step in learning to swim is to acclimate oneself to the water. Don’t let fear hold you back and immerse yourself in the water. Where to start at the beginning? Start in shallow water. Such as A pool or near a shoreline, where your feet can still touch the bottom. You will be guided by a trained instructor, there is nothing to fear.
Step 02: Floating in water.
In the second step, it is important to become comfortable and proficient in floating. This will help to build confidence and overcome any fears of being in the water. How to achieve it? It can be achieved by keeping your lungs full of air. Then, slowly and steadily position your body in the water while holding on to something for support. Got it?
Step 03: Floating like a starfish.
In the next step, learn to float in the water similar to a starfish. How? Firstly, Keep your face up and your entire body stretched out. Then, keep your whole body flat and relaxed. Spread your legs out to the sides. This is how a starfish floats in the water.
Step 04: Breathing control in the water.
In the fourth step, practice controlling your breathing while underwater. It allows you to stay underwater for longer periods of time. Besides, it improves your overall swimming ability.
Step 05: Hand-over-hand steering in the present state.
Now, steer your own hand on a specific steering wheel. Slowly and gradually steer one hand over the other on the steering wheel. As we turn the steering wheel while cycling, turn the hand in the same way. Steer both hands on the same wheel.
Step 06: Keep your head above water.
While steering with your hands, try to raise your head above water level. Keep your head above water and keep your whole body in a present state. Continue to practice steering with your hands at the same time.
Step 07: Move forward.
Lastly, try to move forward by steering with your hands. Use your back to push the water behind you with both hands. Simply, pull yourself forward. It’s a difficult technique to push yourself forward by using your back. But with practice, you will be able to master it.
Reasons why you may not be able to swim
Are you trying to learn to swim for many days? Many of us have a strong desire but still can’t learn to swim. There’s always a specific reason behind not being able to achieve something. It’s not always a matter of lack of interest.
Let’s tell a story:
Me & my friend tried learning swimming at the same time. I was able to learn it within a few hours. On the other hand, my friend took almost a month. But what was the actual reason behind this? Let’s discuss this.
Firstly, he tried using a swimming tube and the reason behind that was fear. He was afraid that he might drown in the water. In reality, we tend to stick to a specific method of learning. However, the second reason was a lack of patience. He would get out of the water after 5-10 minutes of practice. Does it say interest in learning at all? I don’t think he was interested in learning. I practiced for about 1 hour on the first day. Then I tried slowly by myself. Then I learned swimming successfully.
Hopefully, this incident will help you understand why you can’t learn to swim.
